Innovation and technology transfer is increasingly the source of sustainable competitive advantage for firms in the global knowledge economy. If successful innovation management is going to happen, it is necessary to recognize technology with commercial potential and evaluate how economic value may be captured. The emphasis throughout the course is on the development of conceptual models which clarify how innovation creates new markets, the interrelationships between competitions, the patterns of technological and market change, the development of organizational capabilities, and the importance of intellectual property and its protection. Some of the key topics covered include: (1) conceptual and theoretical models of innovation, (2) how commercial potential is taken forward into a new or existing business, (3) managing intellectual property portfolios, and (4) exploitation strategies.
This is not a course focusing on new product development. The main aim of this course is on the application of a set of analytical frameworks to develop technology strategy as an integral part of corporate strategy. The course should be of particular interest to students interested in managing technology-intensive business.
The teaching materials include lectures, case analyses, and independent readings. The readings are particular from research in technological change, appropriability regimes, and organizational theory.
